37-foot long iPad (app)

LAST year saw the release of an astonishing piece of work by Matteo Pericoli who incredibly (and, some say, obsessively) documented twenty miles of London’s Thames riverbank, from Hammersmith Bridge to the Millennium Dome… in freehand pen and ink drawings! The book, entitled London Unfurled, was created from over 6,000 photographs taken over a fortnight, which were then painstakingly recreated over two years, and has been produced as a 37-foot long, accordion-format publication. The detail is astonishing, particularly when viewed as a total work, including 1,343 buildings, 27,180 windows, and 2,262 waves!

Inspiring him in this rural idyll (which I managed to track down and visit a few years ago), around the end of the Great War, was an adjacent, unspoilt woodland he would frequent – which led to one of his close friends describing his wonderful, new music as ‘wood magic’.

Open plaques

I GUESS my fascination with tracking down places of cultural interest stems from an obsessive interest in British composers. My long-suffering family having spent many years coming to terms with this unceasing desire to seek out the houses and haunts relating to such luminaries as Sir Edward Elgar, Gerald Finzi and even Mike Oldfield – until they finally submitted and are now happy to join me in my explorations, even if it does sometimes involve wandering through other people’s homes!

Stand back!

AS the guy at Origin Creative responsible for much of our proofreading, I guess it’s only natural that, when out and about, erroneous signs tend to catch my eye (and camera lens). So, as a light-hearted blog entry, here’s a collection of some of my favourites – but with the all-important message: before you publish… stand back!
